Imagine seeking medical care in a hospital, only to find pigeons nesting in the wards and mould creeping along the walls. This is the unsettling reality that emerged at Wollongong Hospital, where severe weather and heavy rain exposed vulnerabilities in the facility's infrastructure. But here's where it gets controversial: while the hospital has addressed these issues, the situation raises questions about the long-term resilience of healthcare facilities in the face of increasingly extreme weather events.
Wollongong Hospital, a critical healthcare hub, faced a series of health and safety challenges following prolonged wet weather. The older persons' mental health unit, for instance, became an unexpected haven for pigeons and bird lice, a situation that could pose significant health risks to vulnerable patients. And this is the part most people miss: mould was discovered in multiple areas, including the intensive care unit, sprinklers, ceilings, and even a bathroom floor, with water seeping into an elevator. At nearby Shellharbour Hospital, ceiling tiles collapsed under the weight of accumulated water, though Bulli and Coledale hospitals reported no such issues.
All problems have since been rectified, according to an Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District spokeswoman. She attributed the issues to severe weather damaging roof panels, allowing birds to enter, and causing water leaks that fostered mould growth. A comprehensive remediation program, involving pest control experts and complex repairs 50 meters above the ground, was completed in December 2025. Road closures and police assistance were required to ensure safety during the process. Bird netting has also been installed to prevent future infestations.
Mould in the intensive care unit, renal ward, and other areas was promptly addressed, with repairs completed by early 2026. At Shellharbour Hospital, a missealed gutter led to a waterlogged ceiling tile, which was replaced after the roof was repaired. But here’s the kicker: while the spokeswoman emphasized that patient care was not compromised during the repairs, the incident highlights the broader challenge of maintaining healthcare facilities in an era of unpredictable climate patterns.
The LHD spokeswoman assured the public that patient and staff safety is a top priority, stating that mould is a common issue in complex buildings and is addressed rigorously in accordance with infection control protocols.
