It all started when eagle-eyed viewers noticed that a flashback scene from Volume 1 of the fifth and final season of the Netflix series seems to contradict an earlier version of the same memory shown back in Season 1. The moment in question reimagines one of the show’s most emotional origins: the construction of Castle Byers.
In the new flashback, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and his brother Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) are seen building the fort on a sunny afternoon in the woods, laughing and enjoying the daylight. But long-time fans were quick to point out something odd—the scene doesn’t line up with Jonathan’s original description of that day from the 2016 debut season.
“Do you remember the day Dad left? We stayed up all night, building Castle Byers, just the way you drew it,” Jonathan told Will in the earlier episode. “And it took forever, because you were terrible at hammering. Then it started raining, but we stayed out there anyway and both ended up sick for a week.”
That rainy, emotional night was referenced as a key bonding moment between the brothers—so the bright and cheerful atmosphere in the Season 5 memory didn’t sit right with some.
