Tired of clunky video previews in your messages? Google Messages, the default messaging app on Galaxy phones and tablets, is getting a makeover to make shared YouTube videos look even more appealing. It's all about making those shared links pop!
Over the years, Google Messages has been steadily improving. Since we often share links to videos, articles, and websites, Google wants to ensure they look their best.
So, what's changing?
The way YouTube video previews appear in your conversations is getting a fresh look. Previously, you'd see the video's URL, followed by an image, title, and a brief description. The new design is much more visually engaging. It showcases a larger image, the video's title, the YouTube favicon, and the website's domain name. This means a cleaner, more attractive preview right in your chat.
When you tap on a YouTube video link within a conversation, it opens in a picture-in-picture window. But here's where it gets controversial... Currently, there's no option to directly open the video within the YouTube app itself. Hopefully, this is just a temporary glitch that will be fixed soon.
This improved design isn't just for videos. It's also applied to website and article links, displaying the article's main image, title, favicon, and domain name. If you're not a fan of previews, you can easily disable them by going to Message Settings > Automatic Previews and turning off the 'Show All Previews' option.
This new design is a significant upgrade, offering a cleaner and more modern look. It's currently available in the latest beta version ( 2025112100RC01 ) of the app, released earlier this week.
