Tanzanian hip-hop artist Frida Amani has been appointed as the first-ever Advocate for Ecosystem Restoration by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This appointment comes ahead of the seventh session of the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi, marking a significant milestone in environmental advocacy. With a massive social media following of over one million fans, Frida Amani is a celebrated figure in East Africa's music and media scene. Her accolades include the prestigious Music Cities Award and the Orange Award in Tanzania, both recognizing her exceptional contributions to various aspects of development, including environmental sustainability.
In her role as UNEP Advocate, Amani aims to inspire and mobilize her fans to join the Generation Restoration movement. She believes that it's no longer sufficient to mourn the loss of nature; instead, we must actively restore and protect it. Amani's passion for restoration is evident in her music and activism, as she strives to raise awareness about the importance of ecosystem health and the need to prevent, halt, and reverse ecosystem degradation. This commitment is particularly crucial at the midpoint of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, where her voice will significantly contribute to global efforts in rehabilitating degraded natural areas, from oceans to mountains, cities to savannahs, grasslands, and forests.
UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen expressed her enthusiasm for Amani's appointment, highlighting her relentless passion for restoration and her ability to combine care for people and nature. Amani's social and environmental activism is deeply intertwined with her musical productions and performances. She has initiated various campaigns and events, such as the Kisiki Hai song, the Performance for Nature event, and the Mote Mama Gizani campaign for pregnant women's health. Additionally, Amani serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for the Lead Foundation and has established her own foundation, the Amani Foundation, to support causes aligned with her environmental advocacy.
