In a significant reveal for the upcoming Winter Games, Finland and Sweden have announced their men's hockey rosters. Finland, the reigning Olympic gold medalists, has selected 24 players from the NHL to represent them at the prestigious Milan Cortina event. Meanwhile, Sweden is incorporating fresh talent in their goaltending lineup, aiming to bolster their chances for success.
One notable absence from the Finnish roster is two-time Stanley Cup champion Aleksander Barkov. The star player recently underwent surgery due to torn ligaments in his right knee, an injury he sustained during training camp with the Florida Panthers. To fill this gap, Oliver Kapanen from the Montreal Canadiens has been chosen, marking his return after missing last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.
Among the Finnish players, defenseman Mikko Lehtonen stands out as the only representative currently playing in Europe. He was part of the victorious team at the 2022 Beijing Olympics and has participated in eight games this season with Zurich.
Much like their North American counterparts, the majority of Finland's team from the 4 Nations competition will return for the Olympics. This includes all three goaltenders: Kevin Lankinen, Juuse Saros, and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. The only player not making a comeback is Urho Vaakanainen from the New York Rangers, who is also the sole Finnish defenseman in the NHL left off the list.
Teams from the Dallas Stars and Florida Panthers are well represented on the Finnish roster, even in the absence of Barkov. The Stars contribute four players—Miro Heiskanen, Roope Hintz, Esa Lindell, and Mikko Rantanen—while the Panthers add three: Niko Mikkola, Eetu Luostarinen, and Anton Lundell.
On the other side, Sweden has selected Jesper Wallstedt and Filip Gustavsson from the Minnesota Wild, along with Jacob Markstrom from the New Jersey Devils, to serve as their goaltenders for the Olympic competition.
Coach Sam Hallam has made several adjustments since the 4 Nations Face-Off, where Sweden impressively went undefeated in regulation. Among the changes, goalies Linus Ullmark and Samuel Ersson, defenseman Mattias Ekholm, and forward Viktor Arvidsson will not be returning.
New faces joining the Swedish squad include Gabriel Landeskog, Philip Broberg, Pontus Holmberg, and Alex Wennberg. Landeskog stands out as a remarkable story, having returned to the ice last spring after being sidelined for two full seasons due to a chronic knee issue. He is also one of the few players in this roster who participated in the Sochi Olympics back in 2014.
Meanwhile, Victor Hedman, who faced a significant snub 12 years ago, is currently on injured reserve after undergoing elbow surgery. The Tampa Bay Lightning, his team, anticipate that their captain will make a comeback prior to the Olympic break in February. Notably, Hedman was among the first six players named to Sweden's roster back in June.
This development brings excitement and anticipation for hockey fans worldwide as these talented athletes prepare to compete on the international stage. What do you think about the roster choices? Are there any omissions that surprise you? Share your thoughts in the comments!
