In the heart of West Yorkshire, nestled on the top floor of the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice store, lies the Holmfirth Bridal Suite—a charity shop like no other. Unlike typical second-hand stores, this boutique is a treasure trove of pre-loved and donated wedding dresses, each with its own story to tell. Founded by former seamstress Sharon Scott, this unique space allows brides to find their dream dress at a fraction of the usual cost, all while supporting a vital cause. And this is the part most people miss: the average wedding dress costs around £1,500, but here, you can walk away with a stunning gown for as little as £50 to £750.
But here’s where it gets controversial… Some might argue that a charity shop can’t possibly offer the same experience as a high-end bridal boutique. Sharon Scott begs to differ. She transformed what was once a dusty storage room into a full-fledged bridal suite on a shoestring budget of just £50. ‘Why shouldn’t a bride who comes to us have that experience?’ she asks. ‘It’s not just about buying a dress—it’s about feeling like a princess.’ And she’s not alone in her mission. Take Lauren Crossley, for example. A soon-to-be bride from Holmfirth, Lauren was drawn to the shop after witnessing the hospice’s impact firsthand. ‘My friend used their services when her baby tragically passed away from cot death,’ she shares. ‘This is a charity that desperately needs support.’ After trying on eight or nine dresses, Lauren found ‘the one’—a style she hadn’t even considered. ‘The ladies here were so knowledgeable and kind,’ she says. ‘I knew I’d find my dress here.’ And in a heartwarming twist, Lauren has already decided to donate her dress back to the shop after her wedding, ensuring another bride can experience the same joy.
And this is the part that sparks debate… While some might see wedding dresses as one-time investments, Andrea Titherington-Kay, head of retail at Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, sees them as a lifeline. The hospice needs £6.5 million annually to support children with life-shortening conditions, and 80% of that comes from fundraising. ‘These dresses, often worn just once and then stored away, are now funding critical care,’ she explains. ‘It’s a win-win—brides save money, and children receive the support they need.’
