China's Growing Support for Returning Overseas Students: A Boost for Innovation and Talent
China is stepping up its efforts to attract talent and boost innovation by offering comprehensive support to returning overseas students. With the number of returnees surging, the country has launched a national-level service platform to facilitate job placement and business ventures for these students.
The Ministry of Education has partnered with 50 organizations to provide valuable resources. These include entrepreneurial mentors and direct connections to local government and corporate needs. This initiative highlights the national recognition of the value that overseas returnees bring, despite recent public discourse questioning the worth of studying abroad.
According to Zheng Jinlian, vice-president of the Beijing-based think tank Centre for China and Globalisation, "Overseas students are driving innovation and entrepreneurship. They play a vital role across various industries and in the development of our talent pool."
The ministry has identified sectors like artificial intelligence and new materials as key areas requiring overseas talent. The latest initiative was unveiled at a special event in Shanghai, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the "Chunhui" program. This long-standing state effort encourages overseas students to contribute to national development.
Wang Daquan, director of the education ministry's Chinese Service Centre for Scholarly Exchange, shared insights during the event. He stated that research indicates young people studying abroad have a strong desire to return to China for employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.
