Get ready for a thrilling revelation! Bill Skarsgård, the actor behind the iconic Pennywise, initially had reservations about returning to the role for HBO's "IT: Welcome to Derry". But here's where it gets intriguing...
In an interview with Screen Rant, Skarsgård shared his initial concerns about potentially diluting the impact of the character with a TV show that might not match the success of the previous films. It's a valid worry, right? After all, we've all seen instances where beloved characters lost their shine in less-than-stellar sequels or spin-offs.
However, once Skarsgård got a glimpse of the series' plan, he was hooked. He felt that the show delved into unexplored aspects of Pennywise, offering a fresh perspective on the character. Skarsgård's collaboration with director Andy Muschietti, with whom he always has a blast, resulted in some truly captivating scenes that showcased a different side of the infamous clown.
"I had a lot of fun shooting the series," Skarsgård admitted, adding that his hesitation was more about the initial commitment than the final outcome.
"IT: Welcome to Derry" serves as a prequel to Muschietti's IT films, adapting Stephen King's classic novel. The series takes us back to 1962, unraveling the origins of Pennywise, the murderous, shape-shifting entity that haunts Derry.
Muschietti directed four episodes and co-developed the show with Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs, who also serves as co-showrunner alongside Brad Caleb Kane. The stellar cast includes Jovan Adepo, Taylour Paige, Chris Chalk, and many more talented actors.
The first season of "IT: Welcome to Derry" has been ranked as one of Bloody Disgusting's 10 Best Horror Television Series of 2025 and is now available for streaming on HBO Max. Mark your calendars, horror enthusiasts, as the physical media release is set for May 5, 2026!
So, what do you think? Are you excited to dive into this prequel series? Do you think it will live up to the legacy of the IT films? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
