Benavidez's Ambitions: A Quest for the Cruiserweights
After successfully defending his WBC 175-pound title by knocking out Anthony Yarde in November, Benavidez has set his sights on a new challenge. The 29-year-old fighter announced his intention to move up to cruiserweight, aiming to challenge the WBO and WBA cruiserweight champion, Gilberto Ramirez. However, Benavidez's plans extend beyond Ramirez, as he has his eyes on two Russian heavyweights, Bivol and Beterbiev.
In an interview with the Danza Project, Benavidez revealed his strategic roadmap. He stated, 'I'm a fight Zurdo Ramirez, then we'll come down and make that fight with [Dmitry] Bivol. After that, we'll face [Artur] Beterbiev.' Benavidez's determination to face these Russian giants has been a driving force since his transition to the light heavyweight division in 2024.
The WBC initially mandated that Bivol, who recently defeated Beterbiev in a rematch to become the undisputed champion, face Benavidez. However, Bivol opted to pursue a trilogy against Beterbiev instead, a decision influenced by his back surgery in August. Despite this setback, Benavidez remains confident that his path to the cruiserweight titles will be realized.
Benavidez expressed his unwavering belief, stating, 'Sooner or later, they're gonna have to see me.' This sentiment underscores his determination to challenge the Russian duo and solidify his place among the top cruiserweight contenders.
